"Gehry created a building that has moments where it is "quite conservative and elegant" but also moments where it is "quite flamboyant and over the top," he said. "Frank Gehry, while he's recognized as being an architect, really thought like an artist. He always looked at possibilities, always pushed the limits of materiality," Jost said. Gehry was a lot of fun, a "really great guy," and he "always approached every project as if it was his first project.""
"Gehry was behind the $276 million redesign of the Art Gallery of Ontario, a project that was completed in 2008. More recently, he designed Forma Condos, two mainly residential towers being constructed on King Street W. One tower will be 73 storeys while the other will be 84 storeys tall. Construction on the first tower is projected to be finished by 2028."
Frank Gehry died Friday at 96 after a brief respiratory illness in Santa Monica. Born Frank Goldberg in Toronto in 1929, he moved to Los Angeles with his family in 1947. Gehry led the $276 million redesign of the Art Gallery of Ontario, completed in 2008. He designed Forma Condos on King Street West, two residential towers of 73 and 84 storeys, with the first tower projected to finish by 2028. Stephan Jost, CEO of the Art Gallery of Ontario, called him the most important architect of the last half century and a Canadian icon. Jost said Gehry thought like an artist, pushed material limits, and approached each project as if it were his first.
