Toronto police will increase their presence ahead of the one-year anniversary of the Israel-Hamas war due to rising hate crimes and tensions in the community.
"Hate has no place in Toronto and we stand united in protecting our diverse communities," said Chief Myron Demkiw, emphasizing the need for public safety amid protests.
"We must balance the right to assembly with the need to maintain public order and public safety," addressing potential protests while ensuring community safety during heightened tensions.
There have been 350 alleged hate crimes reported so far this year, marking a 40% increase, particularly affecting the Jewish community, which has seen a 69% rise.
