Toronto orders creator of tiny mobile homes for unhoused people to stop | CBC News
Briefly

The City of Toronto issued a cease and desist letter to Ryan Donais, who created tiny mobile homes intended to temporary shelter the homeless. Despite the safety features of these homes, which can be transported by bicycle, the city deemed them unlawfully occupying public land and posing health concerns. Donais expressed his disappointment, especially after a seemingly positive meeting with city officials about providing approved space for the homes. He emphasized that their existence stems from the city’s failure to address homelessness effectively.
Each home built by Donais has heat, electricity and running water, plus safety features including a smoke detector and fire extinguisher. They can be attached to the back of a bicycle and transported to other locations.
We recognize and appreciate that you are acting with good intentions. However, the City does not condone and cannot permit the installation of these structures for occupation on City property.
