Toronto city council has voted to extend the runway at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport to meet new federal safety requirements, ensuring aircraft safety during overshoot scenarios.
Mayor Olivia Chow emphasized that the runway extension is about safety, stating, 'We're not closing the airport. This is not the question in front of us,' thereby clarifying that ongoing operations will continue.
Councillors debated the runway extension options at length, with the first option being the least costly at $61 million to $64 million, while also emphasizing compliance with Transport Canada's deadline.
PortsToronto's request for a lease extension to 2073 was also discussed, and Chow acknowledged that this would require further deliberation in the future to address potential community impacts.
