
"Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow says the city remains opposed to Ontario's plan to remove speed cameras because the devices keep kids safe near schools. Olivia Chow said the city faces a "serious challenge" with the Ontario government determined to remove automated speed enforcement cameras through legislation the province has promised to table soon. "Do we just let them rip away our best tool for protecting our kids?" Chow asked attendees at a school zone safety summit in the city council chamber Thursday."
""We know these cameras gives us the outcome that we desire to protect our kids and slow down the drivers ... So we need to act now," she said. "We need your voice." Chow added that 250 pedestrians and cyclists have died or been seriously injured on Toronto streets since 2024. "We know that speed kills. And we also know that speed cameras work," Chow said."

The provincial government plans legislation to eliminate the cameras. City leaders warn that removing cameras would strip an important tool for slowing drivers and protecting school zones. Officials report 250 pedestrians and cyclists have died or been seriously injured on Toronto streets since 2024. A study by SickKids and Toronto Metropolitan University found speed cameras reduce speeding in school zones by 45 per cent. Councillors, parents, transportation safety advocates and public health experts organized a summit urging public action to retain cameras.
