A slim majority of voters in South Bruce have expressed their support for permanently entombing Canada's spent nuclear fuel deep underground near their community.
The voting results show that 51.2 percent of voters are in favor of South Bruce declaring itself a willing host for the repository.
South Bruce council is set to review these results and make a final decision, which follows a lengthy search for a safe site for nuclear waste.
The winning community will receive substantial financial benefits and job creation opportunities in exchange for hosting the nuclear waste facility.
