Ford said bail needs to be strengthened because criminals have become emboldened. He said he ditched his police detail to go to Home Depot to buy plants for his cottage ahead of an upcoming visit from Prime Minister Mark Carney. Ford said a man left the store with two backpacks and was trailed by security guards who stopped following because they had been instructed not to intervene. Ford said he tracked the man down, demanded to see the bag, and threatened to beat him when the man refused. Ford said the man then produced a saw blade the store manager said was stolen, and Ford warned he would beat the man if he saw him again.
