Ontario's auditor general reported that government advertising expenditures have skyrocketed, reaching an unprecedented $103.5 million last fiscal year, a significant increase from $33.7 million the year before.
Auditor General Shelley Spence highlighted the trend of advertising spending rising significantly the year before elections, noting a striking $43.2 million was spent on campaigns promoting Ontario's economy.
The largest campaign included ads during major events like the Super Bowl, prompting concerns from Spence regarding compliance with previous standards for partisan advertising, which were relaxed by the former Liberal government.
Spence remarked that the current Progressive Conservative government, despite promises for reform, has maintained the liberalized advertising spending rules that allow for partisan-like ads.
