Ontario NDP pledges to end encampments, as Liberals vow to double disability payments | CBC News
Briefly

Ontario's NDP and Liberal party leaders are advocating for urgent housing and affordability reforms during their campaign, focusing on homelessness and disability support. NDP Leader Marit Stiles aims to eliminate homeless encampments, labeling it a failure of Doug Ford's government, while detailing plans without disclosing associated costs. In tandem, Liberal Leader Bonnie Crombie commits to doubling the Ontario Disability Support Program payments to combat financial strain on those in need. Recent statistics reveal over 80,000 homeless individuals in Ontario, highlighting the escalating crisis in housing affordability and support for marginalized communities.
People are simply moving from one encampment to another, and the last-minute pot of money will not solve the problem.
After seven years of Doug Ford, encampments are the new normal. Seeing tents in parks is a stark reminder of how utterly Doug Ford has failed. He has failed on housing, he has failed on health care, he has failed on creating good jobs, and he has failed to make life affordable.
Crombie says the disability payment boost would be pegged to inflation and phased in over two years.
Stiles listed several steps she would take to accomplish that goal but would not say how much they would cost, saying only 'that will all come' later.
