Ontario government proposes forcing impaired drivers to pay child support for victim's families | CBC News
"No child should have to bear the weight of losing a parent to impaired driving,"
"The devastating impact reaches far beyond the immediate loss it can leave children struggling emotionally and financially." That's why our government is looking at practical solutions that can ease their burden in the wake of such tragedies and provide financial stability for children who are left behind."
"MADD Canada works with those impacted by impaired driving every day, and we know the harsh reality families face because of someone else's harmful choices, he said."
Ontario is developing measures to require impaired drivers who kill a child's parent or guardian to pay ongoing child support. The province cited a Texas 2023 law that requires drivers convicted of intoxication manslaughter to pay child support until the child turns 18 or graduates high school. Officials will examine that requirement and other examples while exploring ways to implement similar measures. Impaired driving was the leading cause of death on Ontario roadways in 2021, with 182 deaths: 96 linked to alcohol and 86 linked to drugs. MADD Canada expressed support for measures that assist victims and hold impaired drivers accountable.
