News goes from bad to worse for Blue Jays starter Jose Berrios
"Berrios has told reporters that he feels fine and that his arm strength is back to 100% after an issue last year that flared up in the spring and carried over to the end of the year. But now after the insurance debacle it seems like there is more to this story than what Berrios and the Blue Jays are letting on. An MRI was needed for Berrios to be cleared to obtain that insurance and there was something in that MRI that denied said clearance."
"Berrios is heading to see Dr. Keith Meister in-person on Tuesday for further examination. He was scratched from his start against the Phillies on Thursday and the Blue Jays have said Berrios won't be throwing until that meeting happens as they are trying to be extra cautious in the event that it is something serious."
"A recent MRI during the WBC insurance process revealed inflammation in his right elbow - a different issue than the one he dealt with last season."
Toronto Blue Jays starter José Berrios encountered complications this week involving the World Baseball Classic and his health status. Initially denied insurance for the tournament, he reapplied and received conflicting information about clearance—first approved by manager Yadier Molina, then denied by GM Carlos Beltran. An MRI conducted for insurance purposes revealed right elbow inflammation, a different issue from his previous arm problems. Berrios claims full recovery and 100% arm strength, but the imaging findings suggest otherwise. He was scratched from his scheduled start against the Phillies and will not throw until meeting with Dr. Keith Meister for in-person examination, as the Blue Jays exercise caution regarding a potentially serious condition.
