Solicitor General Michael Kerzner remarked, "Today is nothing short of historic for First Nations policing in Ontario," while announcing NAPS' transition to essential service status.
Grand Chief Alvin Fiddler highlighted the historical nature of the decision, indicating it recognizes existing gaps within the policing services that have historically not been addressed.
The funding agreement of $514 million aims to support the expansion of NAPS from over 260 to more than 500 officers, improving service in remote communities.
NAPS was formed in 1994 from a desire among NAN chiefs to create culturally appropriate policing, addressing unique needs of First Nations communities.
