"At the curling station in the gymnasium, students pushed forward little benches on wheels that they use in gym class instead of using curling stones. The school also created a scoreboard. "Not everything is perfect," Robin said. Upstairs, there was an ice fishing station, where the school set up cardboard boxes with white construction paper meant to look like snow on the outside. It magnetized fish and seals and put them inside."
"Students created fishing sticks out of wood and string and put magnets on the end to catch the fish. "It's a slower sport but they liked it," said Robin. The students also created their own pretend slalom skiing course. Teacher Iolanda Robin says: 'We're just trying to encourage our students to be active, and just healthy, and just try all these different opportunities.' (Dean Gariepy/CBC)"
Lambton Park Community School in Toronto held a mini-Olympics to mark the start of the Winter Games in Milan Cortina, Italy. Students in grades 1 to 8 rotated through stations featuring curling, magnetic ice fishing, snowboard building and a pretend slalom skiing course. School support staff developed the idea and students helped create the stations, including a curling setup using gym benches on wheels and a scoreboard. The ice fishing station used cardboard boxes with white paper, magnetized fish and homemade fishing sticks with magnets. Organizers aimed to showcase Canadian pride, expose students to new sports, encourage activity and keep tabs on Canadian athletes. The school also wants students to learn about the benefits.
