Iconic Toronto drag bar safe from becoming high-rise for now after community council rejects plan | CBC News
Briefly

The Toronto and East York Community Council has rejected a proposal by Graywood Developments for a 48-storey mixed-use building at a site that houses the popular drag bar Crews & Tangos. Residents expressed concerns that the building's height is unsuitable for the Church-Wellesley neighborhood, noted for its mid-rise structure and significance to the queer community. City council will review the appeal in February, and if denied, they plan to present their reasoning to the Ontario Land Tribunal. Previous plans for a shorter building had received approval in 2022.
The Church-Wellesley neighborhood is a mid-rise community and it is very unique to the city. It's the queer village and it's important to us.
Coun. Chris Moise opposed the redevelopment, stating that the application 'goes against all the things that we care about and this is why I'm so passionate about fighting this.'
