Toronto police reported a 19% increase in hate crimes for 2024, with 443 incidents compared to 372 in 2023, but a 47% decrease in 2024 year-to-date. Despite fewer reported incidents this year, hate crimes remain an issue, with 115 people charged, marking an 84% increase in hate-motivated offences. The Jewish, LGBTQ+, Black, and Muslim communities were the most targeted groups, alongside a notable increase in attacks against the South Asian community. Authorities are working with public transit to combat this issue through educational campaigns.
The report also identified a notable increase in hate crimes targeting the South Asian community, rising from 14 in 2023 to 41 in 2024.
So far this year, there has been a 47-per-cent decrease in reported hate crimes compared to the same time last year.
Police say hate crimes are still a serious concern as many of them are underreported.
The most frequent targets of hate crimes were the Jewish, LGBTQ+, Black and Muslim communities.
