"Jennifer Valentyne alleged while she was co-host of Q107's Derringer in the Morning from 2017 to 2019, her co-hosts Ryan Parker, Johnny Garbutt and John Derringer engaged in "guy talk" which included showing pornographic videos, discussing women's breasts or attractiveness and calling women names, such as "cows." The hearing at the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal comes after the popular rock station radio show was put on hiatus in May 2022."
"At the time, Corus Entertainment Inc. said it was pulling the show off the air amid an external ethics and conduct review. Three days prior, Valentyne posted a video widely shared online condemning the way she says she was treated by her former employer and co-workers. Later, in August 2022, the rock station posted a statement to X, formerly known as Twitter, saying one of Valentyne's co-workers, John Derringer, and Q107 had agreed to "part ways." They added the investigation was ongoing."
"Though Valentyne said she did not participate in the conversations about women, she once mentioned how attractive a man on television was. She alleged after this, Derringer pointed a finger in her face and pressed her up against a wall with his body, telling her she made them feel like "nerds" who "couldn't get good-looking women." After that, Valentyne said she spent the whole show crying and refrained from talking."
Jennifer Valentyne alleged verbal abuse and gender-based discrimination while co-hosting Q107's Derringer in the Morning from 2017 to 2019. She said co-hosts Ryan Parker, Johnny Garbutt and John Derringer engaged in “guy talk” that included pornographic videos, commentary about women's breasts and attractiveness, and derogatory names such as “cows.” Valentyne described a confrontation in which Derringer pointed a finger at her, pressed her against a wall and accused her of making them feel like “nerds” who “couldn't get good-looking women.” She said she cried on air, was bullied, feared HR would side with Derringer, and that Corus later took the show off air pending review.
