Doug Ford criticized an Ontario judge's ruling that struck down the government's plan to remove bike lanes in Toronto, calling it an extreme violation of rights. The government plans to appeal the decision. Ford remains committed to constructing a tunnel under Highway 401, declaring it a necessary action despite previous studies revealing potential public safety risks. Preliminary designs indicate the tunnel will have three levels, and a new feasibility study is underway, expected to conclude in 2027.
"Worst case of trampling on people's rights that I've ever seen ever," Ford told reporters, calling it the "most ridiculous decision I've ever seen."
Ford said he "can't even remember what happened in 2021" and that the project now is a "fresh" start to mitigate traffic issues.
Preliminary plans for the tunnel have it at 19.5 metres wide with three levels: an eastbound lane, a westbound lane and space for a train.
The government has begun the process to complete a new feasibility study into tunneling or building an elevated expressway above the current highway.
