Co-accused resumes testimony at Milton, Ont., murder trial of couple charged in boy's death | CBC
"The trial for Burlington couple Becky Hamber and Brandy Cooney began in mid-September in Ontario Superior Court in Milton and resumed this week. It's before a judge alone, Justice Clayton Conlan. Both women have pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder of a 12-year-old boy, and confinement, assault with a weapon and failing to provide the necessaries of life to his younger brother. The couple had been trying to adopt the boys, who had been in their care for about five years."
"In October, J.L.'s teacher, Sara Biasetti, testified that J.L. had wrapped a piece of twine around his neck and his face turned purple. That prompted her to call Halton CAS. But the caseworker told her it was too political to intervene and CAS needed more evidence he was being mistreated at home before intervening, court heard. Hamber's and Cooney's defence lawyers have contended J.L. attempted to strangle himself at school and at one point physically attacked a pregnant teacher."
A trial in Ontario Superior Court in Milton involves Burlington couple Becky Hamber and Brandy Cooney, who face first-degree murder, confinement, assault with a weapon and failing to provide necessaries of life charges related to two Indigenous boys in their care. The older boy, referred to as L.L., died Dec. 21, 2022; his younger brother, J.L., is alive and has testified. The couple had been trying to adopt the boys after caring for them about five years. Teacher testimony described J.L. wrapping twine around his neck and turning purple, prompting a Halton CAS report. Defence counsel contend J.L. self-harmed and behaved aggressively, and suggest restraints were used to prevent him running away. The trial is before Justice Clayton Conlan and both women plead not guilty.
