Elise von Scheel, a City spokesperson, emphasized that the city has attempted to move individuals from Allan Gardens for over 450 days, aiming to provide better outreach and support for unhoused individuals.
"The work that you are seeing going on behind us here is just to do some of the cleanup now that they are accepting referrals or moving on from the park," said Elise von Scheel, highlighting the city's ongoing efforts to manage encampments.
Despite efforts to clear the encampment, some individuals remain unhoused. As of Friday evening, though nine out of eleven individuals were moved to shelters, two continued to resist relocation.
The city has moved over 400 individuals into indoor spaces in last 18 months. 300 people have utilized shelters, while 100 have been permanently housed, indicating ongoing outreach successes.
