Toronto is facing an $18 billion infrastructure renewal gap over the next 10 years, despite a reported improvement from last yearâs $26 billion shortfall. According to the cityâs 2025 corporate asset management plan, this funding is crucial for maintaining essential services such as transit, social housing, roads, and facilities. Mayor Olivia Chow stressed the importance of addressing this gap to restore deteriorating infrastructure, stating that past neglect has significantly impacted the city's service levels and urged for immediate action to create jobs and support the economy.
"For almost a decade, our infrastructure deteriorated. Whether it's roads, parks, community centres, libraries, subways, tracks, signals, streetcars, buses - it's all been deteriorating and that stops now," said Mayor Olivia Chow.
"This continued deterioration was caused by not fixing what needs to be done to the tune of $26 billion. That's how far we fell behind in fixing our city over the last decade," Mayor Chow emphasized.
