City councillors approved a plan to install bus-only lanes on Bathurst and Dufferin streets south of Bloor Street W. The RapidTO initiative, in partnership with the Toronto Transit Commission, aims to improve public transit efficiency. Initially, the plan included extending lanes to Eglinton Avenue W. However, Mayor Olivia Chow seeks to restore the original design of the project. City staff noted that implementing the lanes could significantly reduce travel times and bring in thousands of new bus riders, despite opposition from some residents.
"Congestion is a problem in the city. Nothing has as large an impact as better public transit." - Mayor Olivia Chow
City staff reported the watered-down version of RapidTO would save five minutes in total on Dufferin Street and three minutes on the Bathurst Street bus route.
Protect Bathurst is a group of residents and business owners who oppose RapidTO developments, claiming the figures aren't adding up and there's insufficient consultation.
An estimated 6,000 people ride the Dufferin bus and 3,000 drive on the route during morning peak hours.
