A new chapter in Toronto: Louis Varland reflects on being traded to the Blue Jays, postseason moments, and tinkering with his changeup
"Honestly, I had no idea or inkling that I was going to be traded,"
"The trade caught me completely off guard."
"At first, it was a bit of a sad moment. I was a Twins fan from an early age growing up in Minnesota, and this was also my first time being traded or moved in my baseball career. However, I understand that it's a business move; the Twins front office has a job to do with trying to improve the team in ways that they seem fit, and I can't blame them for trading me. I have all the respect for them, and there are no hard feelings."
The Toronto Blue Jays surged in 2025 from AL East underdogs to within a few outs of a World Series title. The Blue Jays acquired right-hander Louis Varland from the Minnesota Twins at the trade deadline in exchange for outfielder Alan Roden and prospect pitcher Kendry Rojas. Varland, a Minnesota native drafted in 2019, said the trade initially surprised and saddened him as his first career move, but he expressed understanding that trades are business decisions and conveyed respect for the Twins. Varland entered the deal having posted a 2.02 ERA and a 2.93 FIP across 49 innings in 51 outings, with a 1.102 WHIP, 2.4 BB/9, and 8.6 K/9 as a backend reliever.
