Ellis Howard, 29, will play the leading character James in Channel 4 comedy drama The Rachel Incident, adapted from Caroline O'Donoghue's 2023 novel. Máiréad Tyers will portray Rachel, a bookstore student in Cork in 2010 who quickly forms a life-changing friendship with the effervescent, insistently heterosexual James. The story unfolds against the financial crash and follows Rachel's crush on her married professor Dr. Fred Byrne, with James helping stage a book launch to aid her. Fred's different desires trigger secrets and compromises that entangle James, Rachel, Fred, and Fred's wife Deenie. Daniel Ings and Sarah Greene join the cast, alongside several other actors.
