Season 2 featured a controversial storyline in which Kaitlyn Dever's Abby murders Joel, generating polarized fan reactions and debate over departures from the source material. An actor involved in the series avoided engaging with the controversy, emphasizing that Season 2 cannot be changed. Audiences who dislike the direction are presented the option to skip Season 3 and replay the original game. The adaptation intentionally diverges from the game; the showrunner expected furor and affirmed the production will not aim to placate social media. Neil Druckmann is not involved with Season 3, concentrating instead on Naughty Dog and directing Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. Season 3 will premiere in 2027, with the show's ultimate length undecided.
"There is nothing I can do about it anyway. The show is out. There is nothing that can be changed or altered [for Season 2]. There is not really any point in reading or looking at anything. People are of course entitled to their opinions. It doesn't affect the show, it doesn't affect how the show continues or anything, in any way, so they're very separate things to me. So no, I just don't really engage," Ramsey said.
"In the lead-up to Season 3, Ramsey said people can simply play the game if they want that story. "I would say, you don't have to watch it. If you hate it that much, the game exists. You can just play the game again. You don't have to watch [Season 3]. If you do want to watch it, I hope you enjoy it," Ramsey explained.
