Stephen Colbert will receive the Walter Bernstein Award from the Writers Guild of America East on March 8, 2026, at New York's Edison Ballroom. The award, named for blacklisted writer Walter Bernstein, is presented to a Guild member who has demonstrated with creativity, grace and bravery a willingness to confront social injustice in the face of adversity. Colbert earned the honor after calling CBS's $16 million settlement with Donald Trump a "big fat bribe," continuing to criticize CBS, Paramount, Skydance and the U.S. government after The Late Show was canceled, and challenging changes to FCC equal-time rules. Colbert also famously confronted George W. Bush at the 2006 White House Correspondents' Dinner and joked the award might recognize his work on The Dana Carvey Show.
