James Van Der Beek was born March 8, 1977, in Cheshire, Connecticut. At 15 his mother drove him to New York City to find an agent; he made his off-Broadway debut in Edward Albee's Finding the Sun and appeared in the 1995 film Angus. He won the Dawson's Creek role while studying at Drew University and left school to film the six-season series. He also starred in Varsity Blues and had roles in One Tree Hill, How I Met Your Mother, and Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23. He appeared in the 2025 comedy Overcompensating and is survived by his wife, Kimberly Brook, and six children; their Beverly Hills home received a 2020 makeover by designer Tammy Price.
