Netflix's Star Search Will Let You Vote With Your Remote
"When the Netflix revival of Star Search debuts tonight, it will come accompanied with a new functionality on Netflix TV and mobile platforms: the ability to vote on contestants' performances with your remote. No separate app to download, no number to text or (heaven forbid) call into, no second screen - a new star-rating system will display directly into viewers' screens when it's time to vote, an engagement play that Netflix's unscripted boss credits as his make-or-break proviso for bringing back Star Search at all."
""There was one thing that I wanted to accomplish before I agreed to actually do the show," Jeff Gaspin, Netflix's vice-president of unscripted series in the U.S. and Canada, tells Vulture's Josef Adalian in a new interview: "Live voting where the audience was really the fourth judge - not after the fact, but at that moment. And the only way to really do that effectively is to be able to do it with your remote.""
Netflix launched a Real Time Voting feature for the Star Search revival that allows viewers to vote on performances using TV remotes and mobile devices. Voting does not require a separate app, texting, calling, or a second screen; star-rating prompts and multiple-choice pop-ups appear above the Netflix timeline. Viewers can select from up to four colored buttons during performances or rate talent from one to five stars afterward. Netflix's unscripted leadership prioritized live voting to make the audience an immediate fourth judge, and the product team built the capability to trigger votes in sync with production moments for large-scale participation.
