Paula, played by Tatiana Maslany, is in a contentious custody battle with ex Karl, portrayed by Jake Johnson, who has more money and resources. To her 8-year-old daughter Hazel, Paula is the fun parent who encourages ice cream for dinner, embraces cursing, participates in TikTok dances, and coaches youth soccer. Paula copes by prescheduling no-strings-attached booty calls/therapy sessions with cam boy Trevor, played by Brandon Flynn. Trevor is physically attacked and appears kidnapped, then pleads for Paula’s help. Detective Sofia Gonzalez, played by Dolly de Leon, tells Paula it is probably a scam as Trevor escalates his con and contacts Karl.
