Landman Recap: The Dream That Keeps Coming True
"In true Taylor Sheridan fashion, season two of Landman is taking a while to get going. But this has never really been a plot-driven show anyway, with traditional Big Bads introduced each season to be defeated at the conclusion. This is a soapy comedy-drama about living in West Texas and working in the petroleum industry - and though the cartel theatrics and traditional crime-drama beats kick in from time to time, Sheridan is more interested in day-to-day life."
"That's not to say all "day-to-day life" stories are created equal. Unfortunately, the show has not toned down the ridiculous Angela and Ainsley subplots even a little bit in season two. This week, they're back at the retirement home for an aerobics class that turns into cocktails and dancing. The home has been letting these parties slide because the residents have so much fun, but that comes to an end when Health and Human Services shows up for an early inspection."
"Now, I'm not sure exactly how a situation like this would be handled in real life. But I can say for sure that the male inspector aggressively grabbing Angela to shove her down is completely uncalled for. I don't blame her at all for responding the way she does this time, knocking him to the ground with a solid elbow to the head."
Season two of Landman progresses slowly and prioritizes quotidian life in West Texas and the petroleum industry over conventional plot escalation. The series blends soapy comedy-drama elements with occasional cartel theatrics and crime-drama beats, but keeps focus on everyday experiences and character interactions. Angela and Ainsley continue with exaggerated retirement-home antics, culminating in an HHS inspection and a confrontation in which Angela physically defends herself. Tommy intervenes in support. Parallel threads introduce corporate and offshore-drilling complications, including a missing $420 million settlement tied to M-Tex after a blown gas well off Louisiana.
