"There was always news in the house,"
"I think Jane was one of the early pioneers in television news,"
" We take it for granted today. We see women in so many roles but, when Jane was breaking in, she was one of the first."
Margaret Jane Pauley was born in 1950 in Indianapolis and grew up in a household shaped by newspapers, radio and broadcast news. She moved to Chicago and became the first woman to anchor an evening newscast there. At 25 she succeeded Barbara Walters on NBC's Today, later co-anchored Dateline NBC, hosted The Jane Pauley Show and for nearly a decade has hosted CBS Sunday Morning. Pauley earned Emmy recognition and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder at age 50 in 2001. She became an outspoken advocate for mental health and lent her name to a community health center.
