Former Coronation Street star Beverly Callard set to shake up Fair City
"I knew I wasn't myself and I knew I wasn't firing on all cylinders,"
"I drove to work at 6.30am and filmed till 8.20pm that night, and then I collapsed,"
"I just didn't think anyone like me would have [depression] because I'm a strong, feisty female."
"And you also find it difficult to love anybody else because you are in this black hole but you can't get yourself out of it."
Callard will debut on Coronation Street as Lily, Gwen Connolly's long-lost mother, on February 19. Lily is described as delightfully quirky, unpredictable, and sharp. Callard is best known for portraying Liz McDonald, a role she first joined in 1989 as the damaged but passionate mother of son Steve. She left after nine years, returned after a five-year break, and departed the show in 2020 after 2,362 episodes. Callard has been nominated for major UK television awards and has spoken openly about long-term clinical depression and a collapse on set in 2009.
