"In the midst of disaster and in an attempt to remain civil, the boys organise themselves, led by Ralph and supported by the group's intellectual, Piggy. But Jack, who is in charge of signal fire duty, is more interested in hunting and vying for leadership and soon begins to draw other boys away from the order of the group and, ultimately, from hope to tragedy."
A four-part television adaptation of William Golding's 1954 novel follows young schoolchildren stranded on an unnamed Pacific island after a deadly plane crash. The series is set in the early 1950s and titles each episode after a core character: Ralph, Piggy, Simon and Jack. A cast of new young actors filmed on location in Malaysia, led by Winston Sawyers (Ralph), Lox Pratt (Jack), David McKenna (Piggy) and Ike Talbut (Simon), supported by more than 30 boys as biguns and littluns. The narrative tracks attempts at civil organization, conflict over leadership and hunting priorities, and the descent from order toward tragedy. The production received support from Golding's family and emphasizes themes of human nature, loss of innocence and boyhood masculinity.
