Exclusive: HBO's New Reality Series 'Neighbors' Is a Must-See Look at Modern America
"You love your family and you're tight with your friends. But what about your neighbors? If you're unlucky, and that's many of us, your neighbors are your sworn enemies. Such dynamics are the heart of HBO's newest bit of non-scripted chaos, Neighbors. Esquire has the exclusive first look at the new series, along with the trailer. Coming February 13 from HBO and A24, Neighbors is a reality series that chronicles conflicts between real-life neighbors across America."
""What really got us interested was the idea that, when you're watching these videos, you're only seeing one perspective. We were interested in the story behind those videos. The world behind that one video, and the other person and what their side of the story was.""
""There's this feeling of like, what exists before and after this?" adds Redford. "This appetite for wanting to understand a beef in its totality was a huge part of how we were thinking.""
Neighbors follows real people across the United States who are entangled in disputes with their next-door neighbors, spanning Montana ranches, Florida beachfronts, and suburbs in Indiana, Tennessee, and Texas. Harrison Fishman and Dylan Redford developed the project after becoming engrossed in viral neighbor videos during COVID-19 and sought to reveal the perspectives behind those clips. The series emphasizes the world before and after viral footage and aims to present both sides of conflicts. With casting director Harleigh Shaw, the producers sourced participants from local newspapers, small-claims court filings, and neighborhood Facebook groups for HBO cameras.
