Derek Martin has died at 92. He first appeared on EastEnders in 2000 as widower Charlie Slater and was a regular until 2011. He made guest appearances until his character suffered a fatal heart attack in 2016. His family described him as a father and friend who supported them through highs and lows and said they would miss him terribly. Martin was born in Bow in the East End of London and began acting in the 1960s after working in factories and as a butcher. He appeared in Doctor Who, Z-Cars, The Sweeney and other programmes, and colleagues said they were deeply saddened.
