Derek Martin died aged 92. He starred as Charlie Slater on BBC One's EastEnders from 2000 to 2011, with guest appearances until 2016. His family described him as a friend, supportive through highs and lows, always learning, generous with his time, and requested privacy. Slater arrived in Walford in 2000 alongside his mother-in-law Mo Harris and daughters Lynne, Kat, Little Mo and Zoe, becoming the caring bedrock of the Slater household. Martin was born in Bow in April 1933 and left his job at Smithfield Meat Market in 1962 to pursue acting. He also played DI Fred Pyle in Law & Order and was praised as an authentic working-class voice.
