Andrew Flintoff suffered facial and rib injuries in a crash at Dunsfold Aerodrome in Surrey in December 2022. He experienced deep emotional effects including depression, prolonged withdrawal from leaving his home, and uncertainty about whether he could carry on. Flintoff revealed he cried every two minutes and left home only for medical appointments during the seven months after the crash. He said recovery required learning to be happy and accept himself, and the crash set him back while he worked to find the person he wants to be. He returned to cricket as a relatively safer pursuit and continues to build teenage teams on Field Of Dreams, including an all-girls team in Blackpool.
It was, what 18 months ago? And you know, I've suffered with things like depression in the past before, but this time was different. I didn't know if I had it in me to carry on, not that I wanted to die or anything like that, I just didn't know if I had it in me, and that took a while. It took me a long time to be like that, and then the crash put me back again,
I didn't know if I had it in me to carry on, not that I wanted to die or anything like that, I just didn't know if I had it in me, and that took a while. The one thing, I think, getting quite deep here, but the one thing you just want to be is happy in yourself, and try and be accepting of yourself of what you are.
