Microsoft has confirmed that after December 31, 2024, users will no longer be able to send or receive email using Windows Mail and Calendar. This functionality is ending for all Windows 10 and 11 users who still utilize the legacy application, prompting Microsoft to recommend a transition to the new Outlook app.
Microsoft has been alerting users for months to update to its newer Outlook app, sometimes even doing so automatically. Many users may have encountered earlier expiration dates without realizing Windows Mail would soon become unusable.
While Windows Mail is set to be discontinued, users will still have the option to export their local emails, calendar events, and contacts using the Outlook app, which can facilitate a smoother transition.
This change follows a pattern from Microsoft where older services are gradually phased out. For instance, last year, the company stopped supporting Windows Mixed Reality, removing essential functionalities for users who updated their systems.
