Robin Zeng, the founder of CATL, criticized Elon Musk's understanding of battery technology, stating, "He was silent. He doesn't know how to make a battery." Zeng's assertion emphasizes perceived gaps in Musk's expertise, particularly when compared to CATL's established dominance in lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries.
Zeng noted that the 4680 cylindrical cells, designed to have five times more energy capacity, are facing production challenges. He stated, "Musk had given the team working on the batteries an end of the year deadline to deal with costs and other problems," highlighting the pressure Tesla is under.
Commenting on Musk's overall strategy, Zeng observed that Musk tends to "overpromise" timelines, saying, "Maybe something needs five years. But he says two years. I definitely asked him why. He told me he wanted to push people," which points to a fundamental difference in leadership styles.
