"After primarily focusing on private conversations since its founding, Snapchat is embracing public conversations with a new "Topic Chats" feature. The social network says the feature lets users chat about what's happening in the world and across various communities, from Formula 1 to the reality TV show "Below Deck." Profiles will remain private to anyone you're not friends with, helping prevent unwanted friend requests or direct messages, Snapchat says."
"While a user's display name will be visible next to their message, others won't be able to tap through to their profile from a Topic Chat, the company told TechCrunch in an email. And unlike usernames, display names can't be used to search for someone. Snapchat told TechCrunch that it will use LLM technology and other safety measures to moderate Topic Chats to keep them safe and appropriate."
Topic Chats enable public conversations on Snapchat about news and community interests such as Formula 1 and reality TV. Profiles remain private to non-friends; display names appear beside messages but cannot be tapped through or searched like usernames. Topic Chats will surface related Spotlight short-form videos alongside messages. Moderation will combine LLM technology and other safety measures, require adherence to Community Guidelines, and allow user reports with enforcement actions including warnings and account blocks. Friends' participation in Topic Chats will be visible to help users find shared interests. Public conversation capability expands beyond prior Spotlight comments.
