Microsoft has announced the retirement of Skype, the video-calling service it acquired for $8.5 billion in 2011, effective May 2023. This move signifies the company's continued prioritization of Microsoft Teams, which will absorb some Skype services. Skype revolutionized online communication by utilizing VOIP technology, making video calls accessible to a broader audience. Despite its initial success and massive user base, Microsoft’s decision reflects the competitive landscape and a shift towards a consolidated application for business communications.
"You no longer had to be a senior manager in a Fortune 500 company to have a good quality video call with someone else," said Barbara Larson, a management professor at Northeastern University who studies the history of virtual and remote work. "It brought a lot of people around the world closer."
"You could suddenly have long calls, frequent calls, that were either free or very inexpensive," Larson said. As with other new platforms, scammers also made use of it.
