Microsoft is entering a significant transition period in 2025, set to retire numerous services and features. This will impact administrators as they navigate the deprecation timeline. As Windows 10 wanes and services shift, the landscape for Microsoft 365 admins is about to change drastically, requiring adaptation to new systems and processes to remain functional.
The deprecation of Legacy Exchange Online Tokens will notably affect older Outlook add-ins, vital for linking enterprise processes. While COM add-ins may remain intact, Outlook web add-ins dependent on Office.js APIs are at risk due to the token removal, signaling a drastic change for integrations previously assumed stable.
The Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) Application Impersonation role, useful for granting mailbox access, is also being phased out in February, promoting the use of apps registered with Entra instead. This shift signals Microsoft's commitment to strengthen security and streamline access management in line with modern application architectures.
A series of notable deprecations are also planned for Powershell modules and SharePoint features. Specifically, the Azure AD and MSOnline Powershell modules will no longer be supported post-March, with domain isolated web parts in SharePoint Framework following suit in 2025, indicating a broader trend towards eliminating outdated functionalities.
