A U.S. district judge concluded that Meta does not hold monopoly power in social networking, rejecting the FTC's request to force divestitures of Instagram and WhatsApp. The judge found that the FTC failed to prove Meta currently maintains monopoly power and that past influence does not satisfy the agency's burden to show present dominance. The FTC argued that Meta pursued anticompetitive acquisitions and tracked rivals to neutralize threats, citing CEO Mark Zuckerberg's remark "It is better to buy than compete." Zuckerberg denied acquiring Instagram to neutralize a threat during trial testimony.
