xAI filed a lawsuit accusing Apple and OpenAI of monopolistic behavior and collusion to block competition from rival chatbots such as Grok. The complaint asserts Apple deprioritized Grok in the App Store and integrated ChatGPT into iOS, effectively steering iPhone users toward ChatGPT for generative AI tasks. Grok ranks third among free productivity apps and is integrated into X, which is the top free news app. OpenAI called the filing harassment, and Apple did not immediately comment. xAI claims the alleged conduct reduces competition, investment, and innovation, harming consumers with lower quality, less choice, and higher prices.
"This is a tale of two monopolists joining forces to ensure their continued dominance in a world rapidly driven by the most powerful technology humanity has ever created: artificial intelligence," the lawsuit alleges.
"Working in tandem, Defendants Apple and OpenAI have locked up markets to maintain their monopolies and prevent innovators like X and xAI from competing."
"This means that if iPhone users want to use a generative AI chatbot for key tasks on their devices, they have no choice but to use ChatGPT, even if they would prefer to use more innovative and imaginative products like xAI's Grok," the lawsuit claims.
