In 2023, PC maker Asus shipped its portable gaming PC, the Ally, to compete with Valve's popular Steam Deck. Unlike the Steam Deck which runs Linux, Asus went with standard Windows for its operating system, which allows for more games to run natively and the option to run various PC gaming storefronts.
The Ally X provides a hardware refresh in 2024, enhancing form factor and functionality. It features an AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor, 24GB RAM, generous 80Wh battery, and a 7-inch 1080p screen, offering a strong gaming experience with improved specs.
Despite some concerns with Windows OS for handheld gaming, the Ally X impresses and competes closely with the Steam Deck, although the latter is still considered a better overall gaming experience. The Ally X's upgraded hardware makes it hard to revert to the Steam Deck for some users.
