Amazon is raising pay for its fulfillment and transportation staff in the U.S. by at least $1.50 an hour, with base salaries exceeding $22 an hour.
The company's decision to increase salaries comes after pressure from warehouse staff for better contracts and working conditions, especially following the formation of the Amazon Labor Union.
With the pay increase, Amazon aims to efficiently hire and retain staff during the upcoming busy holiday season, while also introducing free Prime memberships as an added benefit.
Amazon currently employs over 800,000 workers in the U.S. fulfillment and transportation roles, marking a significant improvement from the starting wage of $15 per hour in 2018.
