Firefly Aerospace's uncrewed lunar lander Blue Ghost successfully landed on the moon, making it the second commercial moon landing to date. This mission, which is part of a NASA initiative to reduce costs and support the Artemis program, involved a $101 million contract with additional funding for scientific research. The lander is equipped with tools for soil analysis and is expected to conduct experiments for about two weeks before lunar daytime ends. Additionally, it will capture imagery related to an upcoming total eclipse and a lunar sunset, providing valuable insights into lunar conditions.
We're going to be putting America first, we're making America proud, we're doing this for the US citizens," said acting NASA director Janet Petro.
Blue Ghost was launched in mid-January from Florida, carrying 10 experiments from NASA to the lunar surface.
