Honda has marked a significant milestone by successfully testing its experimental reusable space rocket on Hokkaido island, reaching nearly 300 meters in altitude. This achievement aligns with the company's aim to achieve suborbital space flight by 2029, an ambition it indicated as far back as 2021 when it began studying space technologies. Although the company has yet to decide on commercializing this technology, it sees potential benefits in launching satellites and contributing to daily services as demand for space-related data systems increases.
The test was completed successfully, the first time Honda landed a rocket after reaching an altitude of nearly 300 meters (1,000 feet).
Honda has chosen to take on the technological challenge of developing reusable rockets by utilising Honda technologies amassed in the development of various products and automated driving systems.
Growing expectations for a data system in outer space will likely increase the demand for satellite launch rockets in coming years.
The company said it has made no decisions regarding commercialization of this technology but has the potential to contribute more to people's daily lives.
