European space tech has data to sell - but where are the buyers?
Briefly

Europe's space industry is expanding rapidly but faces difficulty converting satellite outputs into commercial products. ESA prioritizes Earth observation and launched Φsat-2, which transmits high-definition imagery for wildfire, earthquake, flood response, ship detection, illegal fishing monitoring, and marine pollution tracking. Startups face siloed ecosystems and a disconnect between launchers, upstream and downstream companies, and European businesses, which limits adoption of space data. Many space companies are struggling to commercialize and sell data to other sectors. ESA began operations with a €7.68bn budget for 2025, a 1.4% decrease from 2024, smaller than NASA's $25.4bn and trailing CNSA estimates. Increased cooperation and clearer value propositions are needed to bridge commercial gaps.
"Earth observation within the European Space Agency is a major priority,"
"There's still a lot of work to be done, because these companies are still struggling to commercialise,"
"They're still struggling to sell that data to other sectors. Because the space sector doesn't want to buy the data."
