Cognition CEO Scott Wu describes the sleepless weekend that led to the Windsurf deal: 'I live for these moments'
Briefly

Cognition acquired Windsurf's IP, product, trademark, brand, and remaining business, along with personnel, after a planned OpenAI acquisition collapsed. Google hired Windsurf's CEO and core engineering and research teams and licensed parts of Windsurf's technology. Cognition moved quickly over a single weekend to reach an agreement and retain enterprise engineering, infrastructure, marketing, finance, and operations groups that were not taken by Google. The acquisition aimed to preserve talent and integrate complementary capabilities with Cognition's AI coding assistant Devin, preventing remaining employees from seeking other opportunities.
Wu said on the podcast that Cognition acted quickly when it learned the Friday before - along with the rest of the tech industry - that the OpenAI deal had fallen through and that Google was snapping up pieces of Windsurf. That same evening, he and his team reached out to Windsurf's new leadership. "We kind of came to this conclusion together," he said. "Which is, if there is something to do here at all, then it has to be ready to go by Monday morning."
Windsurf's IP, product, trademark and brand, and strong business. Above all, it includes Windsurf's world-class people, some of the best talent in our industry, whom we're privileged to welcome to our team.
