"Technology has transformed every aspect of our lives, making it all so fast and easy, except for this chore that takes the longest and we hate the most. It's actually shocking, when you think about it. We're in the middle of this technological revolution, and yet there's been no innovation in this space since the washer and dryer, 100 years ago."
"I can tap an app to get to the airport, FaceTime with someone on the other side of the world, but I'm still doing laundry like my grandmother."
Mistie Osterhage operates as a home-based Poplin laundry provider in San Diego, loading, washing, folding and delivering customer orders across neighborhoods. She completes multiple orders per day and coordinates pickups and drop-offs with her husband. Poplin launched in 2018 as a peer-to-peer laundry app and has expanded to more than 500 cities, processing over 10 million loads annually. The company originated from a reaction to persistent household laundry burdens and positions itself as technological innovation in a century-old chore. About 200 independent providers serve the San Diego area through Poplin, offering wash, fold, and delivery services.
